Whelping Services
Oakridge Kennels offers whelping services for those serious about our retriever sports. Our goal is to produce top quality litters so that you may get exceptional canine athletes prepared for what their futures hold.

We understand now more than ever the demands of the work place and family activities. Many would like to breed their retriever, but feel they do not have the time and resources to breed and raise a litter of pups. If you have Field Trial or Hunt Test competitive clients or friends in need of whelping services, we are here to assist in that endeavor.

With over 25 years of experience in the retriever training, hunt test and boarding business we have the knowledge, facilities, and means to whelp and care for your litter of gun dog and/or competitive retrievers. Angela devotes much of her time to our puppy program and this portion of our retriever services. She works closely with Forrest Faulkner, DVM of Faulkner Animal Hospital to provide the utmost in care for both mom and pups.

Oakridge Kennels will be responsible for the whelping and raising of the litter; from birth to 8 weeks; including vaccinations, dew claw removal, worming, socialization, and intro to retrieving, swimming, and birds. We will also advertise the litter and assist in placing each pup in a safe and happy home.

Custom whelping includes:
  • Care of your pregnant female for two weeks prior to scheduled whelp date of the puppies.
  • Administration of any drugs or supplements during the time of the female’s stay. The actual drugs or supplements are supplied by the owner’s veterinarian.
  • Whelping the pups. If complications arise and trips to the vet are necessary, the female’s owner pays for the vet services. Any drugs used in the whelping process are to be provided by or paid for by the owner.
  • Trip to vet at three to five days for puppy dew claw removal, initial health screening of each pup and a routine checkup for the new mom by the veterinarian. These vet costs are the responsibility of the owner.
  • Administration of de-worming and de-protozoa medicines. Some of the medicines we use keep the pups free from parasites throughout the time they are here. The cost of these medicines are paid by the owner.
  • Staying at Oakridge Kennels until they are eight weeks of age. During those eight weeks, pups are well socialized, puppies introduced to retrieving, swimming and chasing live birds. We start them on Eukanuba.
  • Marketing to help you sell the pups.
For additional information, cost or to schedule reservations on our whelping services, please feel to contact Angela via email or telephone 704.289.5828.

Pending and Planned Litters:
Please contact us regarding upcoming planned litters. We are expecting field bred litters of blacks, yellows and chocolates in 2013.

Breeding Compatibility Study:

In addition to our whelping services, we offer stud to bitch compatibility research. We want to assist you in matching your female to the best stud and produce excellent line breedings with FC/AFC and MH titled progeny that are genetically clean.

Pairing the right retrievers can indeed provide results in betterment of the breed, but these efforts often take you far beyond "the paperwork" of bloodline knowledge - including talents, traits and abilities. Pedigree and health clearances are vital elements of consideration but there are other elements to this science to producing the best next generations of the retriever.
